I often use myself as a reference for facial expressions. I used to have a little mirror that I'd set up beside my monitor, but later I realized it's easier if I just take a picture of myself. So here's some behind-the-scenes photos of me doing faces for today's page:

Of course, I don't look quite like Flannery, and even less like Zizzy. So these photos are more a guide to how the different facial elements should move in relation to one another, than to how the finished picture should look.
