To create a new first-level character, follow these steps. They don’t have to be completed in exactly this order, but some of the later steps do depend on earlier ones.

1. Ability scores. Determine your Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. Find your modifier for each score.

2. Race. Choose whether you will be a human, elf, dwarf, halfling, or half-orc. Add any applicable adjustments to your ability scores, and make a note of your racial traits.

3. Class. Choose one of the eleven classes: barbarian, bard, cleric, druid, fighter, monk, paladin, ranger, thief, witch, or wizard. Make a note of the special abilities you gain from your class.

4. Role-Playing Details. Decide on at least one bond (pre-existing relationship) with another player’s character. Think about how you will play your character as a person, and note a few details about your character’s hopes, fears, background, and personality.

5. Patron God. Choose your patron deity, if any. This is required for clerics, but optional for other characters.

6. Skills. Determine your skill points based on your class and your Intelligence modifier, and spend them to buy skill ranks.

7. Feat. Choose one feat to start with (or two if your character is human).

8. Equipment. You start with 150 sp to spend on starting equipment. Make a note of your carrying capacity and record your equipment in the inventory slots on the back of your character sheet.

9. Calculate Combat Statistics. Determine your armour class, attack bonus, saving throws, and so on, and record these values on your character sheet. The character sheet is designed to help guide you through most of these calculations, but please ask your referee for help if you run into any problems.

10. Spell List. If you are playing as a spellcaster, determine which spells you have known, prepared, or memorized. This works slightly differently for each class, so refer to your class description for details.
